Laser Hair Removal Q & A

How do lasers safely remove hair?

Lasers operate at different wavelengths that determine the type of tissue they affect and the results achieved. The lasers used to remove hair use wavelengths that are selectively absorbed by colored pigments in hair follicles.

Laser energy passes through your skin without causing harm, then the hair follicles absorb the energy. As a result, they’re destroyed by the heat, and they can’t grow new hair.

Dr. Farhy uses the Cynosure Elite+ to perform laser hair removal. This cutting-edge laser system is safe for every skin type, and your hair removal can be customized because it has two optimal wavelengths and adjustable spot sizes.

How does hair growth affect laser hair removal?

Every hair follicle goes through a three-phase growth cycle. Follicles actively grow hair for up to six years, then the growth phase ends and the follicles enter a brief transitional stage before going into a resting phase.

During transition, the hair begins to loosen. By the time the follicle enters its resting phase, the hair falls out. Each hair follicle follows its own timing, which means you always have a large percentage that are growing, and you only lose about 80-100 hairs every day as some follicles go into a resting phase.

Follicles stay in their resting stage for three to four months, then they start the cycle all over again and begin to grow a new hair.

This growth cycle affects laser hair removal because lasers are only effective when the follicle is in its growth stage. As a result, you’ll need several treatments over a period of time before all hair follicles are successfully treated.

How many treatments will you need?

Most people need four to six sessions, spaced a month or two apart. As a general guideline, the Cynosure Elite+ permanently reduces hair by an average of 79% after three treatments.*

What can you expect during and after laser hair removal?

Prior to your session, the team at the Heart and Vein Center explains the procedure and answers your questions. While many people find laser hair removal tolerable, you may want to consider a topical numbing cream. The length of your hair removal session depends on the size of the area being treated.

You’ll receive detailed care instructions to follow at home after laser treatment. It’s common for the treated area to be red and sensitive or to develop small bumps or pimples. These symptoms should go away in the first few days after laser treatment.
